The local governments of Caloocan and Quezon City commemorated the 124th Independence Day of the Philippines by offering wreaths on the monuments of the country’s heroes found in their respective cities.
The celebration of Independence Day in Quezon City was led by Vice-mayor Gian Sotto who reminded the residents, especially the city government, to continue their honest service for the development of the country.
“On this day we also remember the sacrifices of the frontliners and essential workers who offered their time and risked their lives in our goal to serve and help our country in times of need, especially nitong dalawang nakaraang taon ,” Sotto said.
A flag raising ceremony was held followed by the offering of wreath to the monuments of Dr. Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, and Manuel L. Quezon located inside the QC Hall Compound.
In a video presentation, Mayor Joy Belmonte thanked the “modern day heroes” including the Overseas Filipino Workers, entrepreneurs, and small business owners who continue to help the city’s economy amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
Present during the event were Quezon City Police District Director Brig. General Remus Medina, National and Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) officials, city councilors, department heads, and staff of different city agencies.
Incumbent Caloocan City Mayor Oscar “Oca” Malapitan and District 1 Representative and Mayor-elect Dale “Along” Malapitan also led the city’s wreath-laying ceremony at the Bonifacio Monument, a memorial to Andres Bonifacio, one of the country’s heroes who fought for its freedom.
Rep. Malapitan said the Independence Day is celebrated to remember the sacrifices of the heroes and ancestors, as well as the local government workers, health workers, and frontliners.
Supreme Court Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo, Northern Police District chief Brig. Gen. Ulysses Cruz, guests, and local officials also attended the event.
