NBI fields 210 more agents to detect, probe cybercrime-related complaints

A total of 210 more agents of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has been fielded nationwide to detect and probe cybercrime-related offenses and to arrest violators.

Also, the NBI has acquired various high-tech equipment to improve cybercrime response, investigation and security by its Cybercrime Division (NBI-CCD), the bureau said in a statement.

It said the turnover of the equipment to NBI-CCD was done last Thursday, June 9, by NBI Officer-in-Charge Director Eric B. Distor.

In his message during the turnover, Distor said: “Today, I have assigned ten (10) more agents in Cybercrime Division in Manila and designated two hundred (200) agents for Regional and District offices of the NBI as cybercrime agents who will handle cybercrime related cases.”

He said that under Republic Act No. 10867, the law on Reorganizing and Modernizing the NBI), the bureau is mandated to undertake investigation and detection of crimes and offenses specified in the law.

He pointed out that the primary jurisdiction of the NBI as provided for by the said law includes "Violation of RA 10175 otherwise known as the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012."

The NBI said that early this year, Distor ordered the strengthening of the anti-cybercrime capabilities of the bureau to respond immediately to cybercrime cases and complaints filed by private citizens such as identity theft, online scam or fraud, hacking of bank accounts and personal accounts, phishing, cyber libel, forensic accounting, and other violations of RA 10175.

It said: “Director Distor assures the public that the NBI will continue to provide adequate and necessary tool and equipment to effectively perform its service to the people.”
