PNP commanders warned of one-strike policy vs continuous 'Peryahan ng Bayan' operation

The Philippine National Police (PNP) ordered on Thursday, June 9, all its chiefs of police and unit commanders to step up the campaign against Peryahan ng Bayan and other forms of illegal gambling amid reports of resurgence of operations in some parts of the country.

Police Maj. Gen. Valeriano De Leon, PNP director for Operations, warned that any police commanders found to be negligent in putting an end to the operation of Peryahan ng Bayan in their respective areas will be sacked and replaced with better commanders.

“We have to remind our Unit Commanders that there was a specific instruction from Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea and PCSO (Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office) Chairperson Royina Garma to operate on this Peryahan ng Bayan because this is no longer authorized to operate,” said De Leon.

"We will implement a one-strike policy on this matter," he added.

De Leon issued the statement after the PNP National Headquarters has been continuously receiving reports about operations of Peryahan ng Bayan and other forms of illegal gambling.

In Laguna for instance, De leon said he had instructed Regional Director of PRO4A to validate and conduct investigation on the reports of the operation of illegal gambling in Calamba City and other parts of Laguna.

He said he expects the submission of accomplishment reports regarding the complaints which also cited some names of the operators.

“There is a specific instruction to stop this and when they fail to do it, then they will be relieved and we will find other commanders who will replace them” said De Leon.

In the conduct of the operation against illegal gambling, particularly Peryahan ng Bayan, De Leon advised police commanders to coordinate with the local PCSO officials to map out plans in rendering assistance in the conduct of operations.

“Let us assist PCSO, provide them with necessary procedures on the conduct of operations against illegal gambling,” said De Leon.
