Before today's Apple's announcement at WWDC 2022, everyone was expecting the next iteration of the M1 Apple Silicon series to power the MacPro to complete the entire Mac line-up. Apple, instead, revealed the next generation of the M-series with the M2. The M2 has 8-cores CPU, 10-core GPU and up to 24GB unified memory, compared with the M1's 8-cores CPU, 7-core GPU and 16GB unified memory.

The M2 has practically the M1 Pro's innards, for instance, ProRes encode and decode for one, only with half the memory bandwidth at 100GBps. The M2 performance is close to the M1 Pro, but with a slower bandwidth. Now one wonders what will be the performance of the M2 Pro, Max and Ultra. Hmmm.

The keynote showed a couple of benchmarks comparing the M2 with the competitors, but Apple did not discuss the M2's performance in single-core processes. I guess this will have to wait until the actual units are out and reviewed. Apple equipped the new MacBook Air and 13" MacBook Pro with the M2 (but the M1 MacBook Air still remains in the line-up at US$200 less). The new 13" MacBook Pro is exactly the same as the the previous model, except for the faster M2 processor and Spatial Audio support. The new MacBook Air (MBA), on the other hand, has a new chassis, which ditched the wedge shape design of old, and looks like the same industrial design as the latest iPad and iPhones.

The M2 MBA is thinner and lighter than the previous model, even with a bigger, brighter and better 13.6" display. The M2 MBA also comes with an upgraded FaceTime camera (1080p), Four-speaker sound system with Spatial Audio support, and a bigger battery that translates to the same battery life as the M1 model. And oh, the M2 MBA comes in a new Midnight color alongside Starlight, Space Gray and Silver. Nice, eh? Which one to get?

If you have an M1 MacBook Pro, you are still pretty ok - the improvement is not that much, IMHO. The M2 MacBook Air, OTOH, is a tempting upgrade from the M1 model. Imagine sporting a Midnight M2 MBA with a better display, camera and sound system, not forget the faster M2 chip. Apple has shown the M2 improvements over the M1, this will clearly translate to the A16 vs the A15 chip upgrade come September. One thing, though, where is the MacPro? Will this be running an M2 chip and skip the M1? I sure hope so, but until then, we can only hope.
