Here’s your first look at Netflix’s ‘Wednesday’

Jenna Ortega becomes Wednesday Addams

From gracing the cartoon newspaper section to TV and the big screen, “The Addams Family” has been bringing laughs with a touch of scare to its readers and viewers with its satirical view of the ideal 20th-century family. This time, it heads to streaming platform Netflix, spotlighting one of its iconic characters, the charmingly sadistic Wednesday Addams.

Netflix taps noted director Tim Burton, the filmmaker behind classic movies like “Beetlejuice,” “Edward Scissorhands,” and “Corpse Bride,” for its forthcoming series “Wednesday.” First announced in February 2021, “Wednesday” is set to become a coming-of-age series of the sort, following the Addams’ daughter as she attends Nevermore Academy. The eight-episode show is set to present Wednesday as she “attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago—all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore.”

Bringing her to life is 19-year-old Jenna Ortega. On June 6, the streaming site released the first look of the actress as the titular character, donning the quintessential Wednesday Addams look—white collared-black dress, pale skin, and long braided pigtails.

Joining Jenna in the project are Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams, Riki Lindhome as Dr. Valerie Kinbott, Jamie McShane as Sheriff Donovan Galpin, among others. Christina Ricci, who portrayed Wednesday in previous movies, is also joining the show. Her role is yet to be announced.

“Wednesday” is set to premiere on Netflix in the fourth quarter of 2022.
