CAGAYAN -- A barangay chairman in Peñablanca survived a second ambush attempt in the ‘intersection’ of Brgy. Tungel and Brgy. San Jose in Baggao, Cagayan Sunday, May 29.
Bonifacio Caliguiran, barangay chairman of Brgy. Nanguilattan, Peñablanca, Cagayan and his two companions Henry Kenao Bulliig, 51, and Edmundo Cabiao Sambo, were on board an SUV car when an unidentified motorcycle-riding gunmen fired their guns towards them.
The victims were on their way home from Baggao Cockpit Arena in Brgy. San Isidro, Baggao, Cagayan when the incident happened.
“Isang riding in-tandem na suspek mula sa likod ng ‘zonal marker’ ang ilang beses na nagpaputok ng baril sa sasakyan ng mga biktima at sa kabutihang palad, wala sa kanila ang natamaan,” said Lieutenant Isabelita Gano, Information Officer Of Cagayan Provincial Police.
Gano said police investigators recovered five empty shells at the crime scene.
It marked a second attempt in the life of the barangay captain, the first one being on May 4 this year, when two unidentified gunmen also tried to kill Caliguiran along the national highway in Barangay Quibal.
Caliguiran was with his wife, Marvie Caliguiran, 55, and two others, John Rey Caliguiran (13 years old) and Armelante Collado (34 years old), when he was first ambushed.
During that first slay attempt on Caliguiran, a motorcycle rider overtook the rescue service they had used then, and fired successive gunshots towards them. No one was hurt then.
Pieces of evidence collected at the crime scene include a slug recovered below the driver’s seat, a slug and one live ammunition at the pavement.
“Iniimbestigahan pa kung ano ang motibo sa magkakasunod na pamamaril sa barangay chairman,” the police said.
