UP Visayas' first summa cum laude becomes Kabataan Party-list's representative in Congress

The University of the Philippines Visayas’ (UPV) first summa cum laude, Raoul Danniel Abellar Manuel, is set to become Kabataan Party-list’s representative to the House of Representatives in the 19th Congress.

Kabataan was among the 55 winning party-lists proclaimed by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Thursday, May 26.

Manuel, a native of Barangay Santo Niño Sur in Iloilo City, served as a student regent of the UP Board of Regents for the academic year 2016-2017. It is the highest policy-making body in the entire UP System.

He finished his bachelor’s degree in Applied Mathematics at UPV in 2015 and graduated from UP High School in Iloilo in 2011.

Some of the issues that Kabataan aims to address are the safe opening of schools, assistance to students who have dropped out due to the cost of distance learning, and security of job opportunities for graduates.

Manuel was also the national president of the "Katipunan ng Sangguniang Mag-aaral sa UP (KASAMA sa UP)" and the National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP). (Luisa Cabato)
