‘Triangle of Sadness’ is one of the competing films at this year’s Cannes Film Festival
This week, the world has turned its focus to France as stars and movie elites have come together to celebrate the art of cinema at this year's Cannes Film Festival. Since 1946, it has been one of the most prestigious international film events, showcasing the best movies created by filmmakers all over the world. Its mission, according to the festival’s general delegate Thierry Fremaux, is “to draw attention and to raise the profile of films, with the aim of contributing towards the development of cinema, boosting the film industry worldwide, and celebrating cinema at an international level.”
In its 75th edition, Cannes Film Festival made room for Filipino cinematic talents to shine. Among the Philippines’ films featured in the festival are “Plan 75" and "Itim", which are selected in the Un Certain Regard and Cannes Classics sections. Film projects "Sam" and "The Beer Girl in Yangon" are both participating in the L'Atelier while "Ria" will be part of the Cinefondation - Residence Du Festival, as per the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP).
Another inclusion to this list is the presence of Filipino actress Dolly De Leon on the red carpet as one of the stars of the film “Triangle of Sadness,” one of the competing films of the festival. The 2022 satirical film is written and directed by Ruben Östlund and centers its story on a fashion model celebrity couple who are invited on a luxury cruise for the ultra-rich, until it sank and they become stranded on a desert island.
It features a stellar cast that includes Harris Dickinson, Charlbi Dean, and Woody Harrelson. Dolly portrays Abigail, a toilet manager on a chaotic cruise ship, and is now being praised for her scene-stealing performance. To do it, she based her character on her relatives and friends that are overseas Filipino workers (OFW).
“I simply put myself in her shoes, because there are so many OFWs in my country,” Dolly said in an interview with Variety. “I have relatives and friends who are OFWs and I know how they live, and I know them. So I know the struggle and hardship they go through, having to live in a foreign country and speak a different language they’re not used to, and having to be away from their families and do things to earn money. I just based it on that. I asked myself, ‘What if I, Dolly, was an OFW?’ That’s how I played her. A huge part of me is in Abigail.”
Apart from portraying Abigail, Dolly is known for bringing to life a number of roles in local and international TV series and films. Among her latest performances can be seen in the “7 Days Of Hell” episode for the HBO series “Folklore” and the movie “On the Job,” both directed by Erik Matti.
According to reports, “Triangle of Sadness” gained an eight-minute standing ovation after its premiere at Cannes. Watch its trailers here.
