Roces started at the young age of 15 when she was offered a movie contract on the spot when Dr. Jose Perez, founder of Sampaguita Pictures, reportedly saw her and was impressed with her mestiza features. Roces was immediately signed up to star in the movie “Boksingera” in 1956. Since then, her star rose extraordinarily, with Roces headlining films here and there, smashing box office records and garnering critical acclaim. According to showbiz reports, Roces has starred in more than 130 films. She was not just a popular actress but also a critics’ darling. She got her first Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) nomination for the movie “Ana-Roberta.” This was succeeded with nominations for films such as “Maruja” (1967), “To Susan With Love” (1968), “Divina Gracia” (1970), “Bilangguang Puso” (1972), “Hanggang Sa Kabila ng Daigdig” (1974), and “Patayin Sa Sindak si Barbara” (1974). Finally, in 1978, Susan won her first FAMAS Best Actress award for the film “Maligno.” Eventually, she would be the recipient of five FAMAS awards, including two best actress trophies.
