Cebu Pacific Air pilot admits his viral rant vs Robredo was speculation, no basis
Van Ranoa, a pilot of the Cebu Pacific Pacific Air who went viral after posting his rant against Vice President Leni Robredo, has apparently concocted a story when he claimed that the second highest official of the land caused a diversion of flights last month.
In a statement, Cebu Pacific Air Vice President For Flight Operations Captain Sam Avila confirmed that Ranoa admitted to them that he had no basis for his post against Robredo.
"I confirm that the pilot has made it clear to us that he had no basis for his claim and was purely speculative and careless on his part," said Avila.
In a now-deleted Facebook post, Ranoa insinuated insensitivity out of special treatment on the part of Robredo when he alleged that the Vice President caused flight diversions at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport so that she could be prioritized in the landing.
In the same post, Ranoa claimed that one of his passengers was the ambassador of Australia who was disappointed over the delay. He also claimed that his frustration was shared by other pilots that include foreign pilots.
But his claim of special treatment appeared to be made up.
The Cebu Pacific Air already apologized to the Vice President and vowed action on the matter.
"While the pilot posted his commentary on his own accord, a post he has since removed, on behalf of Cebu Pacific, and as Head of our Pilot Group, I take command responsibility and apologize unreservedly to the Vice President and the general public for the actions of our pilot," said Avila.
"As professional aviators and free citizens of this country, we are free to express opinions, but we are also expected to carry out our roles and duties with utmost discernment and caution," he added.
Avila said the Cebu Pacific has very strict social media policies covering all of its employees and that "such a post should not have been published."
"This is recognized by the said pilot himself. He is currently under disciplinary review in accordance to our Company rules and standards," he said.
Netizens called out the pilot and tagged the Cebu Pacific Air in its social media accounts. A few hours later, the Cebu Pacific issued a statement and released another one later.
