Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri said Saturday, May 14 that would try to get a majority in the 24-member Senate that would help pass the legislative agenda of presumptive president Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.
Zubiri, whose reelection in the May 9, 2022 polls has been all but formalized, said a majority bloc when formed would try not to frustrate the will of Filipinos whose 31 million-plus votes helped Marcos bag the presidency in a very convincing fashion.
Opposition leader Vice President Leni Robredo was second with less than 15 million votes.
During a DWIZ radio interview, Zubiri said the new composition of the Senate appears to be a ‘’very good working Senate".
Of the 12 ‘’winners’’ in the senatorial race, only two are new in the political game. They are Robin Padilla and Ruffy Tulfo.
The others are reelectionists (Zubiri, Joel Villanueva, Risa Hontiveros and Sherwin Gatchalian) or were former senators (Francis Escudero, Alan Peter Cayetano, JV Ejercito, Loren Legarda and Jose "Jinggoy" Estrada).
Mark Villar, who landed in the sixth spot in the senatorial race, is a two-termer congressman. He was the Public Works Secretary.
Zubiri was in the senatorial slate of Marcos and presumptive vice president Sara Duterte-Carpio.
He will continue his role as Senate Majority Leader in the final two weeks of Senate plenary sessions, which will begin on May 23.
Both the Senate and the House of Representatives will adjourn sine die on June 3, the end of the current 18th Congress.
