Inmate dead, 9 others injured in QC Jail riot

A riot erupted at the Quezon City Jail on Friday, May 13, among three rival gangs, resulting in the death of at least one person deprived of liberty (PDL) and the wounding of nine others.

In a report from ABS-CBN, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)-NCR community relations chief Jail/Senior Insp. Midzfar Omar said those involved in the melee were members of the "Bahala Na Gang", "Batang City Jail" and "Sputnik" gangs.

The injured PDLs were given first aid before they were taken to the nearby hospital.

In a video clip provided to the ABS-CBN, scattered debris of pails, wood, iron bars and other things were seen at the jail facility.

Omar said the riot lasted for five minutes. A homemade gun was confiscated inside the jail facility.

Additional personnel from the BJMP Special Response Unit and Quezon City Police District(QCPD) are now deployed in the jail facility.

The BJMP placed the Quezon City Jail at heightened alert. (Chito A. Chavez)
