Gilas men's 3x3 posts mixed results

Gilas Pilipinas already encountered bumps on the road to begin its quest to retain the men’s and women’s gold in the 3x3 basketball competitions of the 31st Southeast Asian Games Friday, May 13 in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Brandon Rosser, Reymar Caduyac, Jorey Napoles and Marvin Hayes won their first two games in contrasting fashion over Cambodia and Thailand before ending the day with a stinging defeat at the hands of Indonesia.

The women’s team composed of Afril Bernardino, Janine Pontejos, Clare Castro and Angel Surada handily beat Cambodia before absorbing bitter setbacks against host Vietnam and Thailand.

With a 2-1 record, Gilas still has an inside track at securing a semis berth going into Saturday’s matches with Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam.

The ladies, on the other hand, will need to regain their bearings and improve their 1-2 record against Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Rosser, Caduyac, Napoles and Hayes, tapped to represent the country after giving Limitless the PBA 3x3 first conference crown, bucked early jitters to pummel Cambodia, 19-7, to open its stint.

They then had to rally from a five-point deficit at the start behind Caduyac before defeating Thailand, 21-16, to make it two wins in a row.

But Gilas couldn’t sustain its form against Indonesia, having to play catch up despite a tight contest before falling 15-13.

Bernardino, Pontejos, Castro and Surada rolled past Cambodia, 21-5, and were poised to get their second win when they took a 16-12 lead against Vietnam.

Things, however, didn’t go Gilas’ way as it fell 21-18 after Vietnam, buoyed by a boisterous home crowd, leaned on its hot shooting from two-point range.

Gilas couldn’t bounce back against Thailand and fell 21-14 later in the day.
