Frascos dominate in Cebu’s fifth district; Gwendolyn Garcia remains governor of Cebu province

CEBU CITY—The highly anticipated rematch for the congressional seat in the fifth district of Cebu turned into a lopsided affair in favor of the incumbent official.

Reelected Fifth District Rep. Vincent Franco “Duke” Frasco ended up doubling his margin of votes against former congressman Ramon “Red” Durano VI in the national elections on May 9.

Frasco was proclaimed winner after garnering 222,288 votes against Durano’s 108,596 votes.

Frasco, who also won against Durano in the 2019 midterm elections, won in all 10 municipalities in the fifth district.

“Sukad sa inyong pagpili kanako isip inyong Congressman niadtiong 2019, akong gipaningkamot nga dili mo mapakyas sa inyong pagsalig kanako. Atong gituman ang atong mga saad sa pag-implementar ug mga programa ug proyekto sa edukasyon, health ug infrastructure alang sa pag-angat sa kinabuhi dinhi sa Kinto Distrito (Ever since you voted me as your Congressman in 2019, I did my best not to put to waste your trust. I fulfilled my promises to implement programs and projects for education, health and infrastructure to improve the lives in the fifth district),” Frasco said in a statement.

Reelectionist Provincial Board Member Red Duterte and neophyte PB Member-elect Mike Villamor, also of Team Frasco, were also proclaimed winners.

In Liloan town, Frasco’s wife, Christina, also won her third term by a landslide, garnering 59,095 votes or over 86 percent of the votes cast, and a lead of close to 50,000 votes over her opponent, retired Judge Ulric Cañete.

Cañete, who also lost to Christine in 2019, got 9,580 votes.

Frasco’s cousin, Councilor Aljew Frasco was also elected vice mayor, and all of the eight councilors under One Cebu Team Frasco won by huge margins.

“Having survived and thrived throughout the most difficult chapters of our life as a Municipality, your resounding trust in my leadership is humbling and heartwarming,” said Christina, daughter of reelected Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia.

Christina also serves as the spokesperson of Davao City Mayor and presumptive Vice President Sara Duterte.
