Quezon City Mayor Belmonte wins second term, beats Rep. Defensor


Incumbent Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte will serve her second term after beating her closest rival Anakalusugan Rep. Mike Defensor in the May 9 election.

Belmonte was proclaimed by the officers of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) as the winner in the mayoral race on Tuesday evening, May 10.

“Buong pagpapakumbaba po akong nagpapasalamat sa ating QCitizens sa muli niyong pagtitiwala at pagbibigay ng suporta sa ating nasimulang pagbabago (I humbly thank our QCitizens for their trust and support for the change that we have begun),” Mayor Belmonte said in a statement.

“Ang inyong mga boto ay malinaw na patunay na nararamdaman niyo ang mga programa’t proyekto ng siyudad sa nakalipas na tatlong taon (Your votes are clear proof that you feel the city's programs and projects over the past three years),” said Belmonte who garnered a total of 662, 611 votes.

Belmonte’s running mate, Vice Mayor Gian Sotto, was also proclaimed after getting 594, 170 votes in the vice-mayoral race.

The city mayor said QCitizens can expect more improved city government services.

“Ngayong pinagkatiwalaan niyo ako na muling pangunahan ang Quezon City sa susunod na tatlong taon, asahan ninyo ang mas pinaigting na serbisyo mula sa inyong pamahalaang lungsod (Now that you have entrusted me to lead Quezon City again for the next three years, expect more improved services from your city government.),” Belmonte said.

“Hindi man madali, patuloy nating isasaayos ang mga luma at baluktot na sistema. Sa abot ng ating makakaya, paglilingkuran natin ang lahat ng QCitizens sinuman ang kanilang ibinoto ngayong halalan (Although it will not be easy, we will continue to fix the old and crooked systems. To the best of our ability, we will serve all QCitizens whoever they vote for in this election),” she added.
