ILOILO CITY—Election day in Iloilo province turned tragic for an elderly man who died while casting his vote on Monday, May 9.

The casualty was identified as Glorioso Parreño of Pototan town.
“He had a cardiac arrest while voting,” said Police Master Sergeant Parreño (not related to the victim) of Pototan Municipal Police Station.
The police investigator clarified an earlier report stating that the 76-year-old man was still waiting for his turn to cast his vote at a precinct in Bagacay village.
“I double checked at the voting precinct. He already voted for national positions including for president, vice president and senators when he started to fall ill and collapsed.” said the police investigator.
First aid responders at the voting center immediately took the victim to Iloilo Provincial Hospital located, but was pronounced dead.
While the victim was not able to vote for the local positions, his votes for national candidates were still counted.
According to the police report, a relative of the victim was the one who inserted the ballot into the vote-counting machine.
