Netflix shows dominated the 58th Baeksang Arts Awards, the Korean awards ceremony honoring shows on TV, films and theater that were released from April 12, 2021 to March 31, 2022
The 58th Baeksang Arts Awards ceremony was held on May 6 at the Korea International Exhibition Center in Ilsan, Gyeonggi Province and hosted by Shin Dong-yup, Suzy and Park Bo-gum.
In the TV category, Netflix’s “Squid Game,” which garnered 1.65 billion hours viewed in the first 28 days on the platform, won the “daesang” or grand prize.
In addition, Hwang Dong-hyuk, who helmed “Squid Game,” took home the best director award while Jung Jae-il of “Squid Game” won the technical award for music.
On the other hand, Netflix’s “D.P.,” which starred Jung Hae-in and Koo Kyo-hwan, won three awards.
“D.P.,” which stands for deserter pursuit, is about a team in the Korean military police which catches those who abandon their military duty and not returning to their units.
“D.P.” bagged the best drama award, Koo Kyo-hwan won best new actor and the powerful performance of Cho Hyun-chul earned him the best supporting actor award.
2PM’s Lee Jun-ho won best actor for “The Red Sleeve” while Kim Tae-ri of “Twenty-Five, Twenty-One” bagged the best actress award.
In the film category, Ryoo Seung-wan, the director of “Escape from Mogadishu,” won the grand prize.
“Escape from Mogadishu,” starring Kim Yoon-seok, Jo In-sung, Heo Joon-ho and Kim So-jin, took home the best film award. “Escape from Mogadishu” emerged as the No. 2 top-grossing film in 2021 in South Korea.
Sol Kyung-gu of “Kingmaker” won best actor while Lee Hye-young of “In Front of Your Face” received the best actress award.
