The 26-year-old construction worker who was arrested for mauling to death his seven-year-old son in Rodriguez, Rizal on Wednesday, April 27, died the next day in his detention cell, the police reported Friday.
Based on the report of Rodriguez Police Station, the suspect, Eraño Veraces, was declared dead on arrival at a hospital shortly after noon on Thursday, April 28.
Police said that prior to Verace’s death, he was seen banging his head against the wall inside the police detention facility shortly after he came from inquest proceedings before noon Wednesday.
He later fell unconscious, prompting his fellow detainees to call the police officers who in turn rushed him to the hospital.
The construction worker was tagged as the one who mauled his son on the street near his residence at Villa San Isidro, Barangay San Isidro on April 27.
The mauling incident was witnessed by some residents who rushed to the victim’s side, leading to the arrest of the suspect.
Lt. Col. Marcelino Pipo, Rodriguez Police chief, told Manila Bulletin that Veraces, according to his live-in partner, was restricted from leaving the house due to his unruly behavior.
His involvement in illegal drugs, however, is still being verified by the police, according to Pipo.
