A group of teachers once again urged the Department of Education (DepEd) to restore Philippine History as a dedicated subject at the secondary level following the “MaJoHa” incident.
For the Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC), there is an urgent need to restore the teaching of the country’s history among high school students after a quiz in a reality show sparked controversy on the quality of education in the country.
A teen housemate in the reality show mistakenly called the three Filipino martyred priests (Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora) or collectively known as “GomBurZa” as “MaJoHa.”
TDC said that Philippine History should be restored as a dedicated subject not just in Grades 7 to 11 (Junior High School) but also in Grades 11 and 12 (Senior High School).
Moreover, the group said that the teaching of Philippine History should be integrated into all subjects possible at all levels or from kindergarten to college.
TDC also urged the government, particularly the Department of Education (DepEd), to strengthen the study not only of Philippine History but also of Philippine Culture and Literature.
“Isama ang pagtuturo ng Peace and Human Rights Education sa mga bata at ang pagpapalakas pang lalo ng Indigenous People's Education (Include the teaching of Peace and Human Rights Education to children and the further strengthening of Indigenous People's Education),” TDC said.
“Ang curriculum natin ay dapat lamang na magpalakas sa patriotismo alinsunod sa atas ng Saligang Batas (Our curriculum should strengthen patriotism in accordance with the mandate of the Constitution),” the group added.
In a statement issued earlier, DepEd maintained Philippine History is being taught in the K to 12 curriculum of basic education.
DepEd explained that despite the changes brought by the implementation of the K to 12 program, the teaching of Philippine history has remained in the basic education curriculum.

DepEd also assured that essential contents and concepts in developing nationalism and civic competence among Filipino learners are embedded and integrated into all grade levels even without a dedicated subject in Philippine History in high school.
