Brillante Mendoza, 2 PH actors honored at 19th Asian Film Festival in Italy

Filipino actors Christian Bables and Vince Rillon won best actor during a competition held in Rome, Italy.

Bables was recognized for the film "Big Bight" while Rillon won for the movie "Resbak."

"Christian Bables has been extraordinary in interpreting the character of 'Dharna,' a gay beautician whose name is mistakenly included in the checklist in the war on drugs. Dhama will have to prove her innocence in the flash of a night. Magnificent Bables, who with his comic interpretation even when the situation is dramatic, makes the character lovable in the eyes of the beholder, for his sensitivity and desire for justice towards people oppress," read the citation.

The citation also read: "Vince Rillon has managed to play the difficult role of a boy who has to survive in an environment dominated by violence, corruption, and continuous prevarication."

The award for best actor was chosen by the jury presided by Elena Bindi and composed by Inti Carboni and Fabia Bettini.

Acclaimed Filipino director Brillante Mendoza was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award after he was widely regarded as one of the major exponents of the “Philippine New Wave."

"On The Job: The Missing 8" was hailed as the best film. The film has been recognized at the 78th Venice International Film Festival when Filipino actor John Arcilla was named the best actor.

Mendoza's "Gensan Punch" was also featured in the same film festival.

Some 30 Asian films were featured in the festival from April 7-13.
