Jewel Alexandria Palacat is the official representative of Ilocos Sur in the prestigious Miss Universe Philippines 2022 Competition, which will be held at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on April 30.

At 6'1, the tourism graduate is the tallest among the 32 official hopefuls this year.

"I chose to join Miss Universe because it is the best platform where I can showcase my uniquely beautiful self, my causes, my province, and the people," said Jewel during an exclusive chat recently.

She added: "I chose to focus on my advocacy which is the SuLoBusFar or supporting local businesses and farmers because with Candon City being dubbed the Tobacco Capital of the Philippines, farming is really one of the main sources of livelihood for our locals. That is why I want to bring this cause to the Miss Universe, to be a voice and a spokesperson."

"I believe that up until this day, our farmers are still working maximum hours under the scorching heat, with blood and sweat only to provide food for their tables. They deserve more recognition, and they deserve to be heard, that is why I am here to speak for them," Jewel also said.

Jewel said she is proud of locos Sur which offers not only its rich culture and heritage but special delicacies and the warm hospitality of the people.

But there's a personal reason why Jewel decided to cut her hair short for the Miss Universe Philippines 2022 Competition.

Late last year, Jewel's father passed on. She was deeply hurt. Feeling lost, Jewel also suffered guilt and trauma.

So Jewel decided to let go of her past and move on by cutting her hair short. In doing so, Jewel said she is more confident now, ready to face the world (or the universe, rather).
