CHR lambasts 2 local candidates in Laguna for 'objectifying' women during campaign

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has lambasted two local political candidates in Laguna for “objectifying women” and “disregarding” proper health protocols in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Assailed by CHR were the acts of 6cyclemind vocalist and Cabuyao Councilor Tutti Caringal II and Calamba City Mayor Timmy Chipeco who were caught on video gyrating their hips in front of a female supporter. The video is now circulating on social media.

To make matters worse, the CHR said the video also showed one of the political candidates removing the face mask of a female supporter.

"We condemn this incident as it is not only exploitative of women and demeans their inherent dignity, but it also debases the incumbent office, which the political aspirants hold," CHR Spokesperson Jacqueline Ann de Guia said in a statement.

"Further, it breaks health protocols as set by the Commission on Elections and Department of Health, especially that the pandemic is not yet over," she added.

The CHR stressed that people who work for the government, including those who aspire to hold political office, need to always uphold the primacy of respecting human rights and not resort to such stunts just to garner laughs and win over voters.

"As the Gender Ombud, CHR takes this occasion to reiterate to the political aspirants involved and their party-mates that women are not sexual playthings to be objectified for the purposes of entertainment for the sake of garnering votes," De Guia, a lawyer, said.

De Guia said the CHR has been reminding those involved in campaign rallies to be mindful of health and safety protocols to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and protect the welfare of those they are promising to serve.

"Candidates must set an example for their followers to follow health protocols given that these are same people that they aspire to serve and protect," she stressed.
