4 OFWs nabbed for importing drugs in Australia—DFA

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Monday, April 4, that it stands ready to assist the four Filipino seafarers who were nabbed in Australia for the alleged importation of illegal drugs in commercial quantity.

Citing reports from the Philippine Consulate General in Melbourne and the Philippine Embassy in Canberra, the Foreign Affairs department said it is closely monitoring the developments of the case.

“The DFA stands ready to provide necessary assistance, including legal assistance, if still necessary, to protect the Filipino seafarers’ rights and ensure that they are given due process and a fair trial,” a statement from the department said.

However, the department also issued a stern reminder to Filipinos “to uphold the rule of law wherever they may be.”

The four Filipinos were employees of US-flagged Safe Bulkers vessel Kypros Bravery. They were arrested in Adelaide, South Australia.

Representatives of the Philippine Consulate General in Melbourne were able to speak with the Filipino seafarers who have been charged with the criminal offense.

“All four are in good health and are being treated well by Australian authorities. They also requested that their families be informed of what happened,” the DFA said.

The Consulate General is in close coordination with Australian authorities on the case while the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) in Canberra has also been in touch with the shipping/manning agency of the cargo vessel.

The Australian government provided individual public defenders for each of the Filipino seafarer when they appeared at the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court last Friday, August 1.
