(Phivolcs)

A 5.0-magnitude offshore earthquake was recorded in Surigao del Norte at around 9:35 a.m., Friday, April 1, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs traced the epicenter of the earthquake at 60 kilometers (km) northeast of General Luna, Surigao del Norte, and was shallow at a depth of 15 km.

It initially measured the earthquake at magnitude 4.8 but later revised it to 5.0.

The earthquake was felt as a “slightly weak” tremor at Intensity II in General Luna and Dapa in Surigao del Norte.

Phivolcs’ instruments also recorded the quake at Intensity I in Surigao City.

It said the earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

Phivolcs advised the public to stay vigilant as aftershocks may occur due to this earthquake.
