The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is fast-tracking the P16.3-billion Cebu Bus Rapid Transit (Cebu BRT) project, which was originally scheduled to operate a crucial segment last year.
Transportation Secretary Art Tugade on Tuesday, March 29, 2022, directed the DOTr Road Sector team to expedite the BRT construction to ease traffic congestion and aid commuters in Cebu City.
On the immediate term, he ordered the Notice of Award for civil works contractor to be issued by May 2022.
Hence, earth-balling activities for the project should start earlier.
While Tugade’s term of office nears its end, he said the construction of the BRT must proceed by June 2022.
In its entirety, the BRT spans 13.2 kilometers, traversing the South Road Properties (SRP) through Mambaling, up to IT Park, with 17 stations, two terminals, and one depot.
Along with the BRT trunk service, a 22.1-kilometer bus feeder system will run over mixed traffic, with two feeder terminals and 76 bus stops/shelters shall traverse along the Cebu IT Park-Talamban (5.2 km); SRP-Talisay via Mambaling (8.7 km); and SRP-Talisay via South Coastal Road (8.2 km).
On its completion and once fully operational, the Cebu BRT will serve around 60,000 passengers daily.
