Man arrested after firing gun in Tondo riot


A 25-year-old man was arrested for firing a gun during a gang war at the corner of Mel Lopez Boulevard and Lakandula Street in Tondo, Manila on Sunday, March 28.

Police identified the suspect as Ryan Soriano, a resident of Brgy. 26, Zone 1, Tondo. Recovered from him was a .45-caliber pistol, one fired cartridge, and live ammunition.

Police Lt. Cl. Harry Ruiz Lorenzo III, commander of Manila Police District (MPD) Moriones Station, said that the gang war started at around 4:30 a.m.

Lorenzo said the police were manning a Commission on Elections (Comelec) checkpoint at the corner of Wagas Street in Tondo when the shooting incident happened.

Members of Manila Police Station 2 and the Tactical Motorized Reaction Unit (TMRU) immediately responded and caught Soriano firing a gun in the middle of the riot.

Police said the suspect will be charged with alarm and scandal, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, and violation of the election gun ban.

Meanwhile, a 16-year-old gang member, who was caught throwing stones and bottles during the riot, was turned over to Manila Department of Social Welfare (MDSW), the police report said.

Police said that the rescued Child In-Conflict with the Law (CICL) will be investigated for the possible filing of complaints against his parents. He will be turned over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). (Terence Ranis)
