2 Chinese nationals arrested allegedly for selling counterfeit medicines

CEBU CITY -- Agents of the National Bureau of Investigation-Central Visayas (NBI 7) arrested two Chinese nationals allegedly for selling counterfeit medicines during a raid of their stores in Mandaue City.

The NBI agents arrested store owner Shi Wenpain and store manager Wu Xiao on the strength of the search warrant issued by Executive Judge Allan Francisco Garcia of Mandaue Regional Trial Court on a complaint by the Food and Drugs Administration.

A third store in Mandaue which is also owned by a Chinese national was also raided for the same offense but the owner was not around.

The NBI 7 said Alexine Rapunzel Ong Dy remains at large.

The NBI 7 said the separate operations were in compliance with President Duterte’s order to “hold accountable establishments or individuals caught trading fake medicines or selling medicines without proper documents.”

Among the fake medicines seized from the raided stores were Amoxicillin capsules and Lianhua Qingwen Jian, a drug that supposedly treats Covid-19 infection.

The seized items were estimated to cost at least P500,000.

Charges for violation of Republic Act 8203 or the Special Law on Counterfeit Drugs have been filed against the three foreigners, the NBI 7 said.
