Tokyo Olympic silver medalist Nesthy Petecio has laid down her goals for the year 2022, beginning with a repeat of golden performance in the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam in May.

Despite a conflict of schedule between the SEA Games and the AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships, which will be held both in May, Petecio decided to shift her focus in the SEA Games. She bagged the gold medal in the 2019 edition here.
"Sabay po 'yong World tsaka SEA Games so nagdadalawang isip kami kung saan magpapadala (The World Championships and SEA Games will happen simultaneously so we're still considering which competition to join)," said Petecio. "SEA Games na lang po kasi sa kondisyon po talaga. Ayaw ko po maglaro na performance lang, gusto ko 'yong buwis buhay talaga (But I'd prefer the SEA Games. First of all considering my condition. I don't want to join for the sake of performance, I want to go all-out every time I compete)."
The World Championships will also take place in Istanbul, Turkey, something that Petecio considered heavily amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Prior to the SEA Games, Petecio and the rest of the national team members will participate in Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament to open their 2022 campaign.
"Ayaw ko pong bitawan 'tong medalyong 'to. 'Yong medalyang 'to blessing po yan. Pinaghirapan po namin 'yon, pinaghirapan din nila (boxers) 'yon. Pero mas maganda pa rin po talaga 'pag gold (I don't want to let go of this medal. This is a blessing for us boxers because we have worked hard for this. So it will be great if I bag the gold once more)," added Petecio, also the 2019 AIBA Women's World Champion.
Petecio, alongside fellow silver medalist Carlo Paalam, has not seen active competition since winning their respective medals in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics last August 2021.
Meanwhile, the 29-year-old Davao del Sur native seeks redemption for her Asian Games campaign in Hangzhou, China on Sept.
For the past three editions, Petecio, a 2015 Asian Championships silver medalist, has yet to reach a podium finish.
"Sa lahat po ng major events na nasalihan ko, sa Asian Games pa akong walang medal. 'Yon 'yong bucketlist ko sa taon na to (I don't have a medal in the Asian Games yet so that's one thing added to my bucketlist)," said Petecio.
