5-year-old boy drowns in Bacolod

BACOLOD CITY - A five-year-old boy died after he fell into a canal amid heavy downpour in Barangay Mansilingan here on Monday.

The name of the victim was withheld.

According to the police, the victim was playing in the rain with his sibling and other companions who were all minors, when he slipped and fell into the canal. The boy was then carried away by the strong in the canal.

Heavy rains occurred early afternoon due to localized thunderstorms, causing flooding in some parts of the city.

When the water subsided, rescuers retrieved the victim’s body inside a culvert, after almost three hours of searching, according to Barangay Captain Rodolfo Pico.

Pico said the child was found more than 200 meters away from where he fell.
