Cloud-based energy monitors, eSensors seen to save energy amid rising fuel prices

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said Monday, March 14, that cloud-based energy monitors and eSensors could help save energy amid the rising prices of fuel.

"Ang krudo sa Pilipinas na ginagawang gasoline, diesel, at LPG ay imported, kaya pag tumaas ang presyo ng krudo sa mundo, tataas din ang presyo ng gasolina, diesel, at LPG sa Pilipinas (The Philippine crude oil that makes gasoline, diesel, and LPG is imported, so when the price of crude oil in the world rises, the price of gasoline, diesel, and LPG in the Philippines also rise)," DOST Undersecretary Rowena Guevara said during a Laging Handa briefing.

Guevara noted that higher fuel prices are also in the United States and Australia where both countries have their own oil reserves.

Meanwhile, Guevara stressed that the country's "first line of defense" against rising fuel prices around the world is lowering its energy consumption.

"Itong cloud-based monitors at eSensors ay isang madaling paraan para malaman ng government buildings at malalaking buildings yung kanilang konsumo at kung saan sila nagwe-weigh ng energy (These cloud-based monitors and eSensors are an easy way for government buildings and large buildings to track they energy consumption)," Guevara said.

"Kung hindi natin naiintindihan kung paano tayo mag-consume, hindi natin maibababa o hindi tayo makakapag-conserve ng energy. Kaya itong mga eSensor at paggamit ng cloud-based monitors ay aming inirerekomenda (If we don't understand how we consume energy, we can't lower our consumption. So these eSensors and use of cloud-based monitors are recommended)," she added.

According to Guevara, the use of cloud-based monitors and eSensors is seen to provide temporary relief to the public.

"Pag nag-conserve tayo ng energy, syempre yung babayaran nating kuryente, bababa. At pag bumaba yung overall consumption natin ng energy sa bansa, ay hindi ganun kalaki yung impact ng pagtaas ng presyo ng gasolina sa ating lahat (When we conserve energy, of course the amount we pay for electricity will go down. And when our overall energy consumption in the country goes down, the impact of the fuel price increase on all of us will not be that big)."
