Filipino students named champions in Asian English Olympics


Filipino students from the University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P) emerged as the grand champions at the 2022 Asian English Olympics.

The event consists of seven divisions, namely: debate, newscasting, speech, storytelling, spelling bee, radio drama, and short story writing.

UA&P students Scott Tiamson and Arielle Keithley Mirandilla emerged as champions under the debate division; Christian Paculaba was named as champion under the speech division; and Chill Paloma Albasin likewise topped the Storytelling category.

Meanwhile, other finalists include Julia Rocio Gatdula, Jamie Emilie Alabin, Stephen Dusaban Jr., and Karen Gabrielle de Sagun who placed second in the radio drama category; Samanta Ysabel Co ranked third in the newscasting category, and Mikhael John Penalosa made it to the top 10 in the short story writing category.

The contingent was managed by Trivium, UA&P's English Olympiad.

Other participating countries included South Korea, Thailand, and Bangladesh.

Established in 2011, the Asian English Olympics is one of Asia's largest English competitions, having gathered over 5,500 students from all over the region since its inception.
