LPA near Surigao may bring heavy to intense rains over parts of Visayas, Caraga

The low pressure area (LPA) southeast of Surigao del Sur has a "low chance" of developing into a tropical depression in the next 24 to 48 hours but may bring "heavy to intense" rains over some Visayas and Mindanao areas, including Masbate, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Monday, March 7.

PAGASA estimated the LPA's location at 135 kilometers southeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur as of 10 a.m.

The LPA is expected to bring heavy to intense rains over Eastern and Central Visayas, Caraga, and Masbate.

Meanwhile, Western Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Zamboanga Peninsula, Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, Davao de Oro, Davao Oriental, Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Sorsogon, Catanduanes, and Romblon may experience moderate to heavy rains.

"Under these conditions, scattered flooding and rain-induced landslides are likely, especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards as identified in hazards maps and areas with significant antecedent rainfall," PAGASA warned.

Moreover, it urged the public and disaster risk reduction and management offices concerned to take appropriate actions.

"PAGASA Regional Services Division may issue local heavy rainfall warnings, rainfall/thunderstorm advisories, and other severe weather information specific to their areas of responsibility as appropriate," PAGASA said.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of the country may have partly cloudy to cloudy conditions with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to the easterly winds and localized thunderstorms.

PAGASA also advised the public to take precautions as flash floods or landslides may sometimes occur during severe thunderstorms.
