‘The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure,’ ‘Uncharted’ top February box office in Korea


The Korean movie “The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure” and the American film “Uncharted” topped the monthly box office in South Korea in February 2022.

According to the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), which tracks box office receipts, cinema admissions in February totaled 3.26 million, down by 43 percent from 5.71 million January.

People stayed away from cinemas due to the surge in coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases in South Korea brought by the Omicron variant.

Korean cinemas grossed 30.93 billion won (about $25.7 million) in February, a decrease of 44 percent, from 55.6 billion won ($46.2 million) in January.

“The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure” is the No. 1 film in Korea in February, selling 705,444 tickets and grossing $5.43 million. Since its release on Jan. 26, the Korean film has sold 1.31 million tickets and earned $10.29 million at the box office. It stars Kang Ha-neul, Han Hyo-joo, Lee Kwang-soo, Kwon Sang-woo, Sehun and Chae Soo-bin.

In second place in February is “Uncharted” starring Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg, Sophia Ali, Tati Gabrielle and Antonio Banderas. The movie, released in South Korea on Feb. 16, has earned $4.98 million and sold 614,842 tickets in February.

Placing third is the Korean film “Kingmaker” starring Sol Kyung-gu, Lee Sun-kyun and Yoo Jae-myung. The film, released on Jan. 26, earned $3.45 million and sold 440,149 tickets in February.

Japan’s “Jujutsu Kaisen: 0” placed fourth and “Death on the Nile” came fifth.
