A Catholic prelate has condemned the shooting of Infanta Mayor Filipina Grace America in Quezon province on Sunday.
Infanta Bishop Bernardino Cortez asked the faithful to pray for the mayor and for justice to prevail.
“May justice prevail in this wicked crime,” he said in a CBCP News post.
“Conflicts and indifference can never be resolved by violence. Instead, will create division amongst the people,” added Cortez.
America, 50, was on her way home from church when her vehicle was ambushed before noon by still identified gunmen.
The local chief executive sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to a hospital in Manila.
America is a known opponent of the controversial Kaliwa Dam project, which is also opposed by the Infanta prelature.
