The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is eyeing to expand the implementation of the number coding scheme that would include the rush hours in the morning.
Currently, the Unified Vehicular Volume Reduction Program (UVVRP) or number coding scheme, is implemented on weekdays, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., except holidays, and only covers private vehicles.
But under the modified number cording scheme, Artes said they are eyeing to implement it from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.
"We do not want to impose the number coding for the whole day due to lack of public transportation," said Artes.
He said that based on his discussion with the MMDA's Traffic Discipline Office, the traffic situation is usually light from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in major thoroughfares in Metro Manila.
The MMDA's plan to expand the implementation of the number coding scheme came after the recommendation of the Metro Manila Council, composed of 17 mayors of the National Capital Region, to downgrade to COVD Alert Level 1 Status starting March 1.
Metro Manila is currently under Alert Level 2 status until Feb. 28.
If the recommendation is approved, the volume of vehicles in Metro Manila are expected to increase due to the expected easing of restrictions.
