
Retired Supreme Court (SC) Associate Justice Rosmari D. Carandang assumed on Wednesday, Feb. 23, her new post as chancellor of the Philippine Judicial Academy (PhilJa), the education arm of the judiciary.
The new chancellor took her oath of office before Chief Justice Alexander G. Gesmundo at the SC’s session hall. She succeeded Chancellor Arturo D. Brion, also a retired SC member.
Carandang retired last Jan. 9 as SC member. President Duterte, as of 2 p.m. on Feb. 23, has not appointed her replacement in the 15-member SC.
A press statement issued by the SC’s public information office (PIO) stated that Carandang is the second lady chancellor of PhilJa. The first head of the academy was the late Justice Ameurfina A. Melencio Herrera.
Another past chancellor was retired SC Justice Adolfo S. Azcuna whom Brion succeeded.
Carandang served the SC for more than three years. She was the 9th placer in the 1975 bar examinations.
In 1933, she was appointed judge of the regional trial court of Manila and was promoted to the Court of Appeals in 2003. In 2018, she got another promotion as SC associate justice.
