GOSSIP GIRL: Pranking the media

The media con prank from left: Julia Barretto, Marco Gumabao, Xian Lim, the columnist Giselle Sanchez, the scary pic of media member Sukoshi Matsuno, and Direk Brilliante Mendoza.

Pranks are probably the bestselling topics in the YouTube channel. It seems that the audience gets very amused on the genuine reaction of the victim of the prank, especially if it’s a celebrity. It shows the vulnerability of a celebrity and makes them look “human” and not superstars, which fans adore because they can actually relate to the celebrity once they are humanized.

Comedian Chad Kinis is probably the best celebrity prankster of all time. I dread the day he decides to pull a prank on me. Kim Molina ended up crying when Chad and their director Daryll Yap started fighting on the set of her movie Jowable. She was so afraid of Direk Darryl that when they said it was a prank, she started to break out into tears.

Xian Lim

Another comedian Tetay kept on cursing Chad Kinis because Chad placed a “fake” waxing paper on the eyebrows of Tetay and made Tetay believe it was real wax paper. The prankster comedian already has almost two million subscribers because of the pranks he pulls to his fellow celebs.

To be honest with you, I hate pranking. Yes, it’s fun, but I always think what the feeling of the victim on the other end of the prank. So you can imagine how difficult it was for me to pull this prank to the members of the press as dictated by the Vivamax PR team.

Julia Barretto

It was the presscon of Brilliante Mendoza’s "Bahay na Pula," a thriller starring Xiam Lim, Marco Gumabao and Julia Barretto. This is a true story about a “comfort” house in Polo, Mindoro during the Japanese war, where comfort women were raped and killed by Japanese soldiers. I remember my opening line in the presscon, “Before we start, we just want to pause and take this moment to pray for the souls of the victims of the former hacienda ‘Bahay na Pula.’ Some of you may not know, but this site is remembered for the mass rapes and murders committed by Japanese forces during World War II.”

What the media did not know was the Vivamax PR team conspired with two media people Tita Aster Ammoyo and Dondon Sermino together with the host (me) and the actors involved in the movie to prank the media. The prank was to scare the members of the media with scary noises coming from this unkown media member Sukoshi Matsuno during the presscon then suddenly a scary picture was to be flashed in the Zoom meeting to culminate the prank.

Marco Gumabao

The scary noises were working, I could feel the tension from the media in the chatbox. Sermino was also a good actor as he is a journalist, so the prank was doing well. It just failed when they flashed the scary pic because it was too small and the sound effects were very minimal.

The actors Julia Barretto, Xian Lim and Marco Gumabao were also smiling instead of getting scared. I was the only one acting frightened. Still, it was a good break from a straight up presscon. "Bahay na Pula" will start streaming this Friday in the Vivamax streaming app you can download from your phones or in your computer at web.vivamax.net.
