BI intercepts South Korean fugitive at NAIA

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has stopped a South Korean fugitive from boarding his flight to Cambodia at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport and placed him under arrest upon the request of his government.

In a report to BI Commissioner Jaime Morente, port operations chief Carlos Capulong said 31-year-old Lee Taeyang is subject of arrest warrants issued by the Cheonglu district court in Korea and the Interpol for violating his country's national sports promotion.

The Interpol office in Manila disclosed that Lee and his cohorts set up several illegal gambling sites in the Internet wherein their clients can bet on the results of international and domestic sports like soccer, volleyball and baseball.

Bettors were asked to place wagers in the syndicate's bank account.

It was learned the ring earned profits of up to US$33 million since it started it's clandestine operations in 2018.

Lee was brought to the BI detention facility in Taguig City pending deportation.
