22,000 kids in W. Visayas infected by COVID-19

ILOILO CITY — Since the start of the pandemic, approximately 22,000 children have been infected by COVID-19 in Western Visayas region.

The Department of Health (DOH-6) aims to curb the spread of COVID-19 infection among minors with the February 14 formal rollout of the vaccination for those between five to 11 years of age.

DOH-6 Regional Director Adriano Subaan, who injected the vaccine for the ceremonial kickoff of the Iloilo provincial government, said that the vaccination can protect families and communities.

Across the region, more than a million children are targeted for COVID-19 vaccination.

Based on DOH-6 data, majority of the COVID-19 infection among minors were asymptomatic.

However, there were 62 COVID-19 deaths among minors since 2020. This includes 27 deaths of children who are below five-years-old.

Negros Occidental province had the most number of COVID-19 infections for children below 18 years of age. The province recorded almost 6,000 cases of minors.

Iloilo province had more than 5,000 COVID-19 infections among minors.

Bacolod City had around 3,500 COVID-19 infections while Iloilo City had more than 3,000 infections.

Aklan province had more than 2,500 infections while Capiz had more than 1,000 COVID-19 infections.

The provinces of Antique and Guimaras had less than 1,000 COVID-19 infections each.

Meanwhile, the pediatric COVID-19 vaccination rollout went smoothly. Each locality had their own ways of getting children at ease including giving them toys, candies, snacks or having clowns around.
