PH Navy has new 4 Skyhawk planes

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) received on Thursday, Feb, 10, four brand new Cessna 172S Skyhawk Trainer Aircraft from the United States as part of the military modernization.

Defense Sec. Delfin Lorenzana said the four Cessna trainer aircraft are worth $2.2 million under the US Foreign Military Financing Program and will be used by the Philippine Navy Naval Air Wing.

"These air assets will significantly improve the Navy's ability to prepare naval pilots for the crucial task of monitoring and safeguarding our maritime territories and domain," said Lorenzana.

"As we rejoice over this milestone, we also recognize the productive and enduring relationship between the United States and the Philippines which is the key to the success of this acquisition program," he added.

Since the administration of President Aquino, the military has been aggressive in its modernization program following the territorial dispute at the West Philippine Sea that was highlighted during a standoff with Chinese Coast Guard and the Philippine Navy at the Scarborough Shoal in 2012.

Among those procured were 12 fighter jets from South Korea, warships and missile systems.

Lorenzana expressed gratitude to the United States, through US Chargé d’affaires Heather Variava, who was present during the turnover ceremony at Sangley Point, Cavite.

"On our end, rest assured that we are committed more than ever to the alliance. we acknowledge our shared commitment to help preserve the peace and security in the indo pacific region," he added.

The Defene chief also said that this year is a productive year in the modernization of the Philippine Navy following the delivery of eight frigates with surface to surface missile capability. Two fast attack interdiction craft-missile will also be delivered soon.
