OWWA: Repatriated OFWs due to COVID-19 pandemic reaches over 900k
More than 900,000 Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who have been affected by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic have been repatriated so far, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) said on Thursday, Feb. 10.
OWWA Administrator Atty. Hans Leo J. Cacdac said part of the repatriation for a total of 923,652 OFWs food, transport assistance, and hotel quarantine accommodation.

“At the beginnning of today 923,652 na po ang napauwi natin mula sa Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE)-OWWA and the interagency effort na pinangungunahan ni DOLE Sec. Silvestre Bello III (At the beginnning of today 923,652 were repatriated with the help of DOLE-OWWA and the interagency effort led by DOLE Sec. Bello),” said Cacdac during the Laging Handa briefing.
He said that when the facility-based quarantine for fully vaccinated Filipino nationals and tourists was temporarily suspended under Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) Resolution 159, approximately 20,000 OFWs benefited from the first nine days of the resolution’s implementation.
“Halos 20,000 OFWs po sa loob ng less than 10 days and counting ang nakauwi lalo na nung unang araw nung Feb. 1 halos 6,000 agad ang napauwi natin dahil nagbabaan mula sa hotel quarantine lahat eh (In less than 10 days we were able to sent home almost 20,000 OFWs. In Feb. 1 alone almost 6,000 were sent home, including those who just completed their seven-day quarantine),” he explained.
He also noted a lower occupancy rate in hotel quarantine facilities.
“A total of 1,582 OFWs are in 51 hotel quarantine facilities, a drastic reduction from 7,000 two weeks ago. Nung kasagsagan ng omicron at nagkaroon pa ng pagkaantala ng byahe due to typhoon odette umabbot ng mga halos 14,000 that was about a month ago (About a month ago almost 14,000 OFWs were staying in these facilities due to the onslaught of the omicron variant and Typhoon Odette),” he explained.
According to Cacdac, OWWA and DOLE are ready in case of mandatory quarantine for OFWs returns.
“We stand ready. We have 2,000 OWWA frontliners and support of frontliners nationwide,” he said.
