Expanded face-to-face classes in areas affected by Omicron surge, 'Odette' may start late --- DepEd
Places affected by typhoon Odette as well as areas that have declared suspension of classes due to Omicron surge may start the implementation of expanded face-to-face classes on a later date, the Department of Education (DepEd) on Wednesday, Feb. 2, said.

Given the approval of President Duterte, DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones authorized all Regional Directors to commence the progressive expansion phase of face-to-face classes for both public and private schools in areas under Alert Levels 1 and 2.

DepEd said that Academic Quarter 3 is set to start on Feb. 7. However, “certain divisions may start on a later date” following the class suspensions during the Omicron surge and on account of “Odette” in certain affected areas.
Following the directive by Briones for regions to conduct the readiness assessment in all schools during the pilot implementation period, the Regional Directors have submitted a list of 6,686 schools nationwide that have passed the School Safety Assessment Tool (SSAT).
Of this number, DepEd said that 6,586 are public schools and 100 are private schools.
“This list will progressively increase as the rest of the schools are able to address their respective SSAT gaps,” DepEd said. Based on the COVID Alert Levels for Feb. 1 to 15, 2022 as issued under Inter-Agency (IATF) Resolution No. 159-A date Jan. 29, 2022, a total of 304 public schools are located in Alert Level 2 areas.
Of the 304 schools, 118 are located in cities under the National Capital Region (NCR); 12 in Batanes; 106 in Bulacan; 33 in Cavite; 21 in Rizal; five in Biliran, and nine in Southern Leyte.
DepEd said that as of Feb. 2, there are no ongoing face-to-face classes because the schools “are on their mid-year break” from Feb. 2 to 5 as cited in the School Year (SY) 2021-2022 calendar.
Citing reports from regional directors, DepEd said that the participating schools in the expansion phase will start the implementation of expanded face-to-face classes this February.
