DENR to showcase Boracay wetlands rehab in World Wetlands Day celebration
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is set to showcase the rehabilitation of the world-famous Boracay Island during the celebration of the World Wetlands Day 2022 on Feb. 2.
"The celebration will focus on the department's plan to save wetlands from further degradation," DENR Sec. Roy Cimatu said in a statement.

"Wetlands are among our country's natural assets, and thus we have made them part of our ongoing rehabilitation of Boracay Island. Showcasing their importance through wetlands recovery and restoration in the island is an effective means of spreading awareness to the public," he added.
Through the Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB), Cimatu said they will hold the activity at the Boracay Wetland Conservation Park in Barangay Balabag, Boracay Island.
During the event, Energy Development Corp. (EDC), an adopter of the DENR's "Adopt-a-Wetland Program," will hand over the completed project for Wetland No. 2 to the department after more than three years of restoration.

Aside from EDC, the DENR also formed partnerships with other private entities such as Aboitiz Equity Ventures Inc., Boracay Tubi System Inc., and JG Summit Olefins Corp to conserve wetlands.
This year's theme is "Wetlands Action for People and Nature," emphasizing the need to maintain and assure the sustainable use of wetlands for humans, animals, and the environment.
"By restoring the 'Wetlands of Boracay,' we do not only conserve their ecological functions in the island but also add to the diversification of Boracay's tourism attraction sites," Cimatu said.
