To the one who has, more will be given

Reflections today

Part of a person’s growth is to continue challenging oneself. “Beat your own record!” To beat one’s personal best is the attitude of a champion. If there is one characteristic that distinguishes the winner from the loser, that would be the fact that the winner just would not quit. He may experience setbacks and momentary defeats, but it is through perseverance and patience that he wins the battle. That is why the Gospel tells us that one who has is bound to get more, since one capitalizes on the fact that one has already acquired something in his or her hands. It is also the reason why those who have little will have their meager possession taken away from them.

Spiritually speaking, the same holds true of a person’s growth. The moment the person quits and abandons the progress he has made, there is no way but to regress, go down, and suffer a spiraling defeat. Constant motivation and vigilance are needed. We cannot simply give up our prayer life and return to a lax conscience. The Holy Spirit shall give us assistance in attaining more spiritual progress.

Gospel • MARK 4:21-25

Jesus said to his disciples, “Is a lamp brought in to be placed under a bushel basket or under a bed, and not to be placed on a lampstand? For there is nothing hidden except to be made visible; nothing is secret except to come to light. Anyone who has ears to hear ought to hear.” He also told them, “Take care what you hear. The measure with which you measure will be measured out to you, and still more will be given to you. To the one who has, more will be given; from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”
