New CA Justice Michael P. Ong takes oath

CA Associate Justice Michael P. Ong takes his oath before Chief Justice Alexander G. Gesmundo

Newly appointed Court of Appeals (CA) Associate Justice Michael Pastores Ong took his oath of office today, Jan. 27, before Chief Justice Alexander G. Gesmundo at the Supreme Court’s session hall.

Justice Ong is the replacement for the CA post which was vacated by Associate Justice Samuel H. Gaerlan who was promoted to the SC on Jan. 8, 2020.

Before his new CA post, Justice Ong has been the senior deputy executive secretary since 2018.

He finished his AB Economics degree at the Ateneo de Manila University and took up law at the University of the Philippines.

He has been in government service for more than 15 years. He was a court attorney at the SC. He became a corporate lawyer and later moved as assistant secretary at the Office of the Chief Presidential Legal Counsel.

Later, he was assigned at the Office of the Deputy Executive Secretary for Legal Affairs. He was the deputy executive secretary for general administration in the Office of the President (OP) before his appointment as senior deputy executive secretary.

Before his career in government service, Justice Ong was a private law practitioner.

Justice Ong is the second official in the Executive Department appointed to the CA this month of January

Last Jan. 21, Chief Justice Gesmundo received the appointment papers of Jennifer Joy Chua Ong as CA associate justice. At the time of her appointment, she is an undersecretary in the Office of the Appointments Secretary of the OP.

Justice Chua Ong, who took over the CA post vacated by retired Justice Ma. Luisa Q. Padilla, was also sworn into office by Chief Justice Gesmundo.
