807 areas under granular lockdown due to COVID spike -- Año

A total of 807 areas nationwide were placed under granular lockdown due to the recent spike of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases.

In a briefing with President Duterte on Monday night, Jan. 24, Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Eduardo Año said that 31 cities and municipalities nationwide were placed under granular lockdown, affecting 1,111 households or 2,145 individuals and 296 barangays.

As of Jan. 21, the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) had the most number of areas under granular lockdown with 140; followed by Ilocos (Region 1) with eight; and National Capital Region (NCR) with four.

Meanwhile, Año also reported that thousands of people were caught violating thw minimum public health standards (MPHS) although many of them wete only warned by authorities.

He said a total of 4,645 individuals were caught not wearing face masks. There were 590 individuals who were found violating the mass gathering rule while 24,398 others disobeyed physical distancing rules from Jan. 16 to 21.

Anti-drug ops

In the same report, Año noted that law enforcement agencies continued the anti-illegal drug campaign amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

He said anti-narcotics authorities conducted 850 operations and made 1,189 arrests of drug suspects from Jan. 15 to 21.

A total of 28 suspects surrendered while four drug personalities were killed during the same period.

A total of 4.8 kilograms of crystal meth or "shabu" and 947.9 kilograms of marijuana were confiscated in the week-long operation with the total seized illegal drugs amounting to P146.7 million.
