Things you should know about the fashions that went into ‘House of Gucci’

The plot: Lady Gaga and her looks as Patrizia Reggiani

Filipino film buffs are taken to a stylish time travel as Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci” hit theaters last Jan. 19. Based on the 2001 book, “The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed” by Sara Gay Forden, the movie relives the family tragedy that’s forever part of the history of the Italian maison.

While the performances of Lady Gaga and Adam Driver as Patrizia Reggiani and Maurizio Gucci truly shone in the film, a particular ensemble also gave them a good run for their money—their costumes, particularly, Gaga’s. Esteemed costume designer Janty Yates, a long-time collaborator of Scott, brought to the big screen a fashion fest that spans the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, a feast for the eye to any fashion history fans.

If you’re as obsessed as we are about Gaga’s looks as Patrizia, Yates took out from the closets some stories about her master costuming in the film.

Only a few Gucci archive clothing were used in the film

Yates pulled about 20 outfits from Gucci’s archive, which also include bags, sunglasses, and belts. But, despite its title, only two of those were used during the filming. “We hardly touched them. They were in a strong room at our hotel under lock and key and guard the whole time,” Yates told Harper’s Bazaar. “We only ended up using two in the film—when we see Lady Gaga in a Double G tunic and trousers with leather trim on 42nd Street finding cheap fakes, and when she's in a Double G silk blouse and leather skirt when she receives her divorce papers.”

Some of the costumes were from Lady Gaga’s closet

In her interview with The Wrap, Yates shared that almost 70 percent of the film’s costumes were custom-made by her team (that includes the recreated runway shows). The others were sourced from vintage shops. While some came from Gaga’s personal archive where the costume designer stressed that “she had one house just for Versaces.”

In the movie, Patrizia was described as resembling the beauty of Elizabeth Taylor. And if there is one thing that fashion people think when the iconic actress is mentioned is the number of jewels she had. Lady Gaga’s look as Patrizia is always adorned with spectacular pieces of jewelry to a point that Yates described her dressing much “like a Christmas tree.” According to EW, some of the sparkling items seen in the film were from Boucheron, Bulgari, and Gucci.

Patrizia Reggiani was never a big Gucci wearer

While the movie showcased her journey in being part of the Gucci clan, Patrizia didn’t always wear Gucci pieces, because “their fashion at the time was conservative,” as Yates mentioned. “Patrizia was a very sexy lady. She dressed to impress, hence all the jewelry. She wanted to show her boobs off, her tiny waist, and voluptuous figure,” she told Harper’s Bazaar. “I've always described Gucci of that era as ‘round and brown.’ Patrizia wore lots of YSL and Dior.”
