CEBU CITY – More than 2,000 new infections of COVID-19 were recorded here in the past two days alone.
Data from the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) showed that city tallied a record-breaking 1,126 new cases on Thursday, Jan. 20, which were the most cases in a single day since the pandemic struck.
The city recorded 902 more cases on Friday, Jan. 21, that pushed its total active cases to 6,292.
"Our positivity rate is at the highest now at 56.62 percent. We really have to help each other to slow down the infection rate so as not to paralyze our vital institutions such as hospitals, banks, supermarkets, etc.," said Councilor Joel Garganera, chief of the city's EOC.
Garganera disclosed that as of Jan. 22, some 316 medical frontliners in Metro Cebu have been infected with the virus.
"Though they are all asymptomatic or have mild symptoms because they are all vaccinated, they have to be isolated still and that affects our operation," Garganera said.
With the rising cases in the city, which is under Alert Level 3, Garganera once again appealed to the public to strictly observe minimum heath protocols.
Garganera reiterated the importance of wearing of facemask, washing of hands and observing physical distancing.
"The government cannot do this alone. This is a shared responsibility, everyone of us has something to do in the increase or decline of our COVID cases," Garganera said.
