In a pastoral letter dated Jan. 20, the prelate also stressed the importance of reading the Bible and understanding it.

"I encourage all of you to have a Bible in your family. The Bible has an impact on our lives when we read, understand and apply it," said Pabillo.

"I hope families read the Scriptures and talk about them. Reading it helps in our prayer. We are taught how to pray by the Scriptures," he added.

"In the Bible itself there is a lot of prayer and we are already praying when we read it with openness to what God will tell us. God never tires of speaking to us because He loves us. So let’s open our hearts and let’s open our Bibles every day to listen to Him," added Pabillo.

In the past, the prelate urged the faithful to take the Bible to heart for it to be an inspiration in their prayers and in life.

The Philippines has been celebrating National Bible Sunday every third Sunday of January since 1982.
