Teen dies, pal hurt in Caloocan motorcycle crash after trying to evade QC checkpoint

A 15-year-old boy died while his companion was injured in a motorcycle accident in Caloocan City after trying to evade a checkpoint in Quezon City Tuesday evening, Jan. 18.

Col. Tyrone DG Valenzona, Quezon City Police District (QCPD) La Loma Station 1 (PS 1) commander, said the fatality (name withheld) and the injured motorcycle rider identified as John Mark Portillo, 19, are both residents of Barangay Tatalon in Quezon City.

Members of PS 1 were manning a checkpoint for “Oplan Sita” at the corner of Banawe and Calamba Streets in Barangay Lourdes at around 7:45 p.m. when they flagged down a blue motorcycle driven by the minor with Portillo as the back rider for not wearing protective helmets.

The duo, however, ignored the police by speeding towards D. Tuazon St., which led to a chase.

The QCPD said that Portillo also pointed a firearm at the pursuing officers, but the gun dropped along the road.

The pursuit reached C-3 Road in Brgy. 125 in Caloocan City where the suspects' motorcycle crashed into a gutter resulting in the death of the minor.

Portillo also sustained injuries and was arrested.

Authorities recovered the blue Kawasaki motorcycle without a plate number and a .38-caliber pistol with ammunition.

Portillo will face charges for violation of Article 151 of the Revised Penal Code (Resistance and Disobedience to a Person in Authority or the Agents of Such Person) and Republic Act 10591 or the Comprehensive Law on Firearms and Ammunition in relation to Omnibus Election Code, according to the police.
